Why discuss subtypes beyond the nine types?
One Four is tearful, another confrontational, another silently enduring. The number alone hardly identifies them as the same type; instinctual subtypes explain the differences. Following Oscar Ichazo, Claudio Naranjo proposed that each type's passion combines with one of three instincts, forming a recognizable character: nine times three makes 27. In this site's model, subtype rather than wing determines a person's concrete presentation.
Three instincts
- Self-preservation (Sp): attention to survival, safety, resources, body and personal space.
- Social (So): attention to groups, position, belonging and one's role among others. Chinese books also translate this as the community subtype.
- One-to-one (Sx, sexual): attention to intensity, attraction and merging with particular people. Also called the sexual or intimate subtype, it concerns relational intensity rather than only sex.
Everyone has all three instincts, but one is most readily recruited by the passion to organize character.

A heuristic: conflict between instinct and center
Naranjo observed that each type often has a subtype unlike its familiar image: an unproud Two, an unvain Three, an apparently fearless Six. This site's energy model proposes a simple interpretation: each instinct conflicts with one center.
- Self-preservation × heart: the heart seeks visibility and evaluation; self-preservation seeks discretion and security. This produces Sp2, Sp3 and Sp4.
- One-to-one × head: the head seeks distance and control; one-to-one seeks intensity and involvement. This produces Sx5 and Sx6.
- Social × gut: the gut seeks personal will and territory; social seeks group service. This produces So8 and So9.
Displaced types (1, 4, 7) span two centers and are more complex. Seven's energy moves from head to gut, making social So7 the countertype, while Sx7, conflicting with the head, is the least worldly Seven. Four moves from heart to head: alongside countertype Sp4, Sx4 also looks unlike Four by discarding shame. One is the exception: the Naranjo tradition identifies openly angry Sx1 as countertype.
This heuristic fits eight of nine types. It helps memory and judgment but is not a law.
How to read these pages
Each page follows the same structure: sketch, keyword origins, passion and instinct, everyday patterns, commonly confused types, and blind spots and growth. Read all three subtypes of your type first, then the types mentioned in the comparisons. Distinguishing what you are not is often an effective way to recognize subtype. Each article also includes the shared type core and the test's anime comparisons.

Subtype keywords come from Ichazo and Naranjo. The descriptions are this site's original interpretations drawing on Naranjo's subtype theory, including 27 personajes en busca del ser and Beatrice Chestnut's The Complete Enneagram, with our energy-center and Jungian-function model added.
